The “Made-to-Order” Paintings of Monica Gaylor

Monica Gaylor art compilation

A Brief History

I am a traditionally trained artist and art teacher. I have been doing art my entire life and teaching art for 20 years. I love painting!!!!

On October 2, 2015 I began the arduous work of launching a long time dream of mine… my own gallery.  It is called Monica’s Gaylor-Y and it is at Etsy.  I could not have foreseen in high school that it would be digital, but time moves us though space and technological advances at the speedy rate of sixty seconds per minute and this is the reality in which I find myself.  A big ole thanks to Etsy.

Not being all that techie, it has been quite a vast learning experience to photograph, digitally manipulate, photoshop, etc. etc. etc. decades of art in numerous styles, techniques, and mediums into a digital gallery experience for potential cyber shoppers…

How the “Made-to-Order’s” are Made

I found that I had a lot of pieces just setting in drawers and hanging on walls from a lifetime of doing art and experimenting with different styles, techniques, and media. I decided to photograph, digitize, and manipulate them into the new-ish pieces you see below.

Oddly, not being very techie, I have found that I love playing with all the new photo-editing apps and programs and I have admittedly gone a little crazy reinterpreting my old works….

Here’s the digitizing process:

  1. Take photograph of art piece.
  2. Play with cropping tool for interesting composition.
    • I love this part for several reasons:
      • (a) Nothing is lost – If I didn’t like the original composition because I was much younger and less experienced and or just playing around with paint when I painted said piece, but it still has amazing moments in it – these moments do not have to be wasted.
      • (b) I can make it into a more easily re-created piece of art that would not be so cost prohibitive to produce.  Etc.
  3. Play with the plethora of other editing, lighting, special effects tools, etc. to create a slightly new-ish and improved work of art.
    • Again, this is an amazing opportunity to fix mistakes, play with other colors, highlights, shadows, etc., and my favorite part is to reinterpret my younger work with my older skill set.  (Apparently, now in life – we get redo’s.  Yeah.)
    • It is also an opportunity to create completely new pieces out of thin air or from my old pieces.  In that case, it’s like a Phoenix rising from it’s old ashes and it is really just too much fun!  Yes, the Luddite is saying that.
    • I like that I get to play and reinterpret the work without wasting expensive art materials.
    • They do come out a bit pixelated or “computer-y” looking from this process, but in my mind that will translate into the painterly techniques (i.e. glazing, scumbling, dry-brushing, layering, depth, etc.) that the finished product will have.
  4. Upload to Etsy and hope somebody will want to buy them.
    • Modern technology has taken us back to the Renaissance.  In the old days, painters did not paint on spec.  They only made commissioned works.  Materials were too expensive to waste on a piece that may or may not have been purchased.  In a world where we create too much waste – art on demand is a breakthrough concept.  It’s the ultimate in minimalism (see my house with art.)
  5. Paint.
    • This is the best part of course.  Getting paid to do what you love.  I can’t wait to paint these new creations and I sincerely hope I get the opportunity to do so!
