Zen Meditation: Da Vinci’s Simple Nature

La Scapigliata by Leonardo da Vinci

Quotes by Leonardo da Vinci

“Human subtlety will never devise an invention more beautiful, more simple or more direct than does nature because in her inventions nothing is lacking, and nothing is superfluous.”

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

“Nature is the source of all true knowledge.  She has her own logic, her own laws, she has no effect without cause nor invention without necessity.”

Meditation Assignment:

  1. Grab pillow.
  2. Sit or lay.
  3. Relax.
  4. Regulate breathing.
  5. Focus:  As Da Vinci has proven over and over – nothing is so powerful as simplicity.  It is elegant, timeless, and forcefully honest.  I speak as a minimalist of 25 years and I have come to learn that simplicity is not just about getting rid of things, but also getting rid of all that hinders the soul from it’s song – be it people, obligations, mental hang-ups, addictions, wrong thinking, etc.  In what ways can you simplify your life in order to hear the song of your soul, your truthful nature, your authentic self, your inner universe, etc.?
  6. Guided:  Walk barefoot and unencumbered along a soft dirt path that cuts through a most beautiful forest that is alive with the coming and goings of nature in all its perfection.  Beside you on the path is someone whom you admire profoundly.  Have a discussion with them about your soul’s song…
