Zen Meditation: Illusions

field of dreams

“Things are as they are. Looking out into it the universe at night, we make no comparisons between right and wrong stars, nor between well and badly arranged constellations.” ~~ Alan Watts

“Out beyond ideas of wrong-doing and right-doing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about. Ideas, language, even the phrase ‘each other’ doesn’t make any sense.” ~~ Rumi

Meditation Assignment:

  1. Grab pillow.
  2. Sit or lay.
  3. Relax.
  4. Regulate breathing.
  5. Focus:  Life is an illusion even though we try to convince ourselves otherwise.  There have been many times when I thought a bad thing had happened and in the end it turned out the be a good thing… in reality all it was was a – most important – moment of transition… an illusion.  I am sure you too have had many.
  6. Guided Exercise:  While you ponder the path walk the path.  View you life from the outside.  I like to envision myself walking on a soft grassy path with my mother (for she embodies the universe now) discussing life’s twists, turns, options, and choices.
