Zen Meditation: Umm, Quantum Mechanics???

shrodingers cat

“Schrödinger’s cat: a cat, a flask of poison, and a radioactive source are placed in a sealed box. If an internal monitor detects radioactivity (i.e., a single atom decaying), the flask is shattered, releasing the poison that kills the cat. The Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics implies that after a while, the cat is simultaneously alive and dead.  Yet, when one looks in the box, one sees the cat either alive or dead, not both alive and dead. This poses the question of when exactly quantum superposition ends and reality collapses into one possibility or the other.”  ~~ Erwin Schrodinger / Wikipedia

“If you try and take a cat apart to see how it works, the first thing you have on your hands is a nonworking cat.”  ~~ Douglas Adams

“Sometimes it seems to me that a bond between two atoms has become so real, so tangible, so friendly, that I can almost see it.  Then I awake with a little shock, for a chemical bond is not a real thing.  It does not exist.  No one has ever seen one.  No one ever will.  It is a figment of our own imagination…  Here is a strange situation.  the tangible, the real, the solid, is explained by the intangible, the unreal, the purely mental.”  ~~ Charles A. Coulson

“Now we come to the heart of chemistry.  If we can understand what holds atoms together as molecules we may also start to understand why, under certain conditions, old arrangements change in favor of new ones.  We shall understand structure, and through structure, the mechanism of change.”  ~~ P.W. Atkins

“Make everything as simple as possible, but no simpler.”  ~~ Albert Einstein

“After you learn quantum mechanics you’re never really the same again.”  ~~ Steven Weinberg

“Small shifts in your thinking, and small changes in your energy, can lead to massive alterations of your end result.”  ~~Kevin Michel

Meditation Assignment:

  1. Grab pillow.
  2. Sit or lay.
  3. Relax.
  4. Regulate breathing.
  5. Focus:  Umm.  I will have to quote from a quantum mechanics expert, Douglas Adams, in laymen terms he has stated, and I summarize – the answer to  the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything is 42.
  6. Guided Exercise:  Umm.  Just pretend you’re in Star Trek.

I think Zen meditation isn’t the right word for this type of meditation. Also, these quotes are great to get people thinking. The first one, even though I know little about quantum mechanics, reminds me of the first thesis of Huizi, of how the infinite pieces leave out the whole and the whole leaves out its pieces.

Hmmm. I will have to see if I can find Huizi online, it sounds interesting.
