Drawing Assignment:

Free Range Artist

Cultivating your creativity exercises are designed to open up the right side of the brain.  Go slow and think of them as moving meditations.  Do not judge your outcomes, simply be – like a child – happily in the moment.

  1. Obtain sketch book or printer paper.  Lined paper works too.  Etc.
  2. Designate a time everyday.
  3. Sit.
  4. Breathe.
  5. Relax.
  6. Contemplate the quote:  “I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells.” ~Dr. Suess.
  7. Create a non-sensical page in your sketchbook and fill it up (not necessarily in one sitting).  When things start to get crowded it is time to have things morph together somehow…  Or, and this is my favorite way to write and sketch, make the whole sketchbook non-sensical.  By this I mean, when sitting down to draw just open it to anywhere, any page, be it up or down, front or back… and just start drawing.  I find going out of order and having to continually twist the book around to be very freeing to my mind and I look forward to squeezing things in here and there.  If you worry about dates, have one book or box of papers (I am like the sticky note and scrap of paper queen) for 2015, that way no dates are required.  I don’t know too many (read: any) artists that actually date anything. Don’t be encumbered by any rules.  Be a “free-rule” doodler!
